Rescue Dog Saves Owner’s Life Days After Being Adopted

When a friend suggested a big dog might be helpful with his frequent falls due to illness, Andrew Budek-Schmuisser of Albuquerque, New Mexico, decided to head to the Animal Welfare Department shelter to see what pups were available. That’s where he met Peanut, a two-year-old Great Dane who’d been at the shelter since November. Andrew took a chance and brought him home earlier this month.

Just one day after Peanut arrived at his new home, Andrew fell and hit his head, leaving him incapacitated on the floor. To make matters worse, because of the way he landed, his windpipe became blocked, posing a severe threat to his life. Fortunately, Peanut instinctively came to Andrew’s rescue, adjusting his head, which allowed him to begin breathing comfortably, and then gently pushing him into a sitting position from behind.

Recalling the incident, Andrew is positive that Peanut saved his life and he’s extremely grateful to his new companion for his quick thinking and loyalty. The dog and his new human are now inseparable and their bond is only growing. “I love the dog with all my heart,” Andrew says, “ He saved my life.”
