Late last month, a California cop rescued a one-year-old terrier mix from a trash compactor in Los Angeles. After hearing faint whimpering outside a church, a Gardena police officer discovered the pup inside the self-compacting trash can.

The officer pulled the puppy out before serious harm could occur and contacted animal control. The dog, later named Flan, was taken to an adoption center where he received care, food, and shelter during a brief holding period.

A few days later, the officer returned with his family and officially adopted Flan. The rescue group says the puppy now has a safe, loving home, thanks to the caring officer who first heard his cries.
