Earlier this week, a semi-truck driver in Louisville, Kentucky, was rescued after his truck crashed on a bridge and was left dangling over the edge. The driver called 911 while trapped in the cab, telling dispatchers he was scared and asking them to save the recording for his family if he didn’t survive. He remained on the line for 18 minutes as emergency responders worked quickly to set up a rescue plan.
Louisville Fire Department crews created a rope system to lower a rescuer into the cab of the dangling truck. The rescuer successfully secured the driver, and both were lifted to safety in about 30 minutes. Chief Brian O’Neill noted the extreme danger of conducting such a rescue operation on a busy interstate bridge.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, which was very similar to an incident from last year involving another truck hanging off a Louisville bridge. Despite the high risk, the rapid and skilled response ensured the driver was saved without serious injury.
