Canton City Council is putting a pause on new discount dollar stores being built in the city.

The council says there is an influx of dollar stores across the city, which is resulting in a moratorium being put in place through 2025 to prevent more stores from opening inside city limits.

Currently, there are around 20 discount stores in the city, including Family Dollars and Dollar Trees.

The decision was met with mixed emotions, as Mayor William Sherer says the discount stores need to offer better and healthier food options, while others say the decision will drive up the costs of goods.

With the moratorium in place, city officials will now work to formulate comprehensive regulations regarding the future of discount stores being built.
