Dogs are Helping Kids Reading Skills

Not all kids love reading, but a program in Colorado libraries is using dogs to change that. The Dog Ears program provides well-trained dogs for children to curl up with while they practice reading aloud.

The idea is, dogs don’t judge, so they make kids instantly more relaxed and give hesitant readers a little self-confidence boost. Orchard Mesa library branch manager Susie Robertson says reading to dogs makes it fun for kids who don’t usually like to read.

“The concept is the children will be more comfortable reading to a dog,” explains Clay Carpenter, handler and Dog Ears volunteer. “It’s really cute. The kids read to the dog and of course, they’re reading to you, too.”
