People Are Putting Up Christmas Decorations to Cheer Themselves Up

It's safe to say that 2020 has been a bit of a washout, but people have decided to brighten things up a bit by getting into the festive spirit.

Usually, I would be all up for slating this early onset of Christmas, but with this year being a shocker by everyone's standards - I am all here for it.

People have naturally taken to social media to share their decorations, and you have to admit - it's quite a pleasant change to see people enjoying themselves:

And while it may still be pretty early, by normal standards, one couple beat all of these lot to the Christmas decoration hype, by putting theirs up a few weeks ago.

Ian Cochran, 68, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, decided to start the festivities in October to try and cheer up the street.

The grandad-of-two and his wife Helen, 68, have been putting up their incredible decorations for the last 35 years - usually in December.

But this year, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Ian thought people could do with a little pre-Christmas pick me up.

On 1 October, he did the big reveal, turning on his lights for all his street to enjoy. His neighbors - and the kids, who have also had it pretty tough this year - were all delighted.

His display includes an inflatable snowman, a blow up Santa disappearing down a chimney, illuminated Christmas trees and of course - a tonne of fairy lights.

Ian said: "We find it very gratifying seeing the reaction to people of all ages enjoying them.

"I thought about it early September knowing many people will be depressed with dark winter nights approaching and possibly no contact with anyone then, and nearer Christmas, with their families.

"It makes us feel happier knowing it's brought some smiles during these troubled times."
